CARBON MARKETS, TRADING, AND PRICING

May 20

Introduction

This is the comprehensive 10-day training program on Carbon Markets, Trading, and Pricing. As the global community faces the urgent challenge of climate change, the need for effective carbon market mechanisms has become increasingly evident. This program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of carbon markets, understand trading mechanisms, and implement carbon pricing strategies. Through a blend of theoretical learning, practical case studies, and interactive discussions, participants will gain insights into the evolving landscape of carbon markets and emerge prepared to contribute meaningfully to the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Course Objectives

1. Provide a thorough understanding of the principles and key components of carbon markets, including their role in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.

2. Explore various carbon trading mechanisms, such as cap-and-trade systems and carbon offsetting, through real-world examples and case studies to understand their operation and effectiveness.

3. Examine different carbon pricing strategies, including carbon taxes, emissions trading schemes, and hybrid approaches, and analyze their design considerations, economic implications, and policy implications.

4. Investigate policy and regulatory frameworks supporting carbon markets, focusing on the design of effective policies, regulatory considerations, and international cooperation efforts to facilitate market development.

5. Develop practical skills for implementing carbon pricing mechanisms, including stakeholder engagement, roadmap development, and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems.

6. Explore strategies for engaging stakeholders and building public support for carbon pricing initiatives, including communication strategies, coalition-building, and addressing concerns and resistance.

7. Examine emerging trends and challenges in carbon markets, trading, and pricing, including technological innovations, scaling up efforts globally, and strategies for continuous learning and adaptation.

8. Facilitate group projects and presentations to apply learning to real-world scenarios, encourage collaboration, and foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills among participants.
